Supreme Court rejects LG Polymers petition, refuses to issue stay on NGT orders

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused the LG Polymers Company's petition asking to issue stay orders on the National Green Tribunal orders, which has directed the company to deposit Rs. 50 crore. The Supreme Court has made it clear that there will be an inquiry by the NGT followed by the Supreme Court. The LG Polymers, which claim that NGT does not have the authority to investigate the case as Suomoto and hence approached the Supreme Court challenging the judgment of the National Green Tribunal and the AP High Court.

The petition has been filed against the immediate deposit of Rs 50 crore in the event of styrene gas leakage. LG Polymers has approached the supreme court stating that the high court and NGT has not heard their arguments. However, the bench said that the court would take up the issue after NGT trial is over and postponed the next hearing to June 8.

The gas leakage incident occurred on May 7 in Visakhapatnam where as many as 12 people have died of styrene gas leakage from LG Polymers in RR Venkatapuram. Hundreds of people got sick and being treated in hospitals. Locals have gone unconscious on the spot by inhaling the poisonous gas. Many trees around us have disappeared. The Andhra Pradesh government has provided ex-gratia to the deceased and the victims.
