Tirupati: Alstom kicks off making Mumbai Metro wagons from Sri City
Tirupati: Alstom India, leader in sustainable and smart mobility, commenced the manufacturing of Metro train-sets for Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) at its factory in Sri City on Tuesday.
Following the formal commencement of works in a ceremony organised at the production plant, Alstom India & South Asia MD Alain Spohr showed the 1:1 scale mock-up of a coach and briefed on the salient features of the project.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that this will be the new face of transportation for the commercial capital of India. The train sets are custom-designed for Mumbai. Themed on Dynamic Fluidism that takes inspiration from the city, the train prioritises high interior density layout to maximise space efficiency. The first Metro train after testing will be delivered by November 2020.
He added that they were on track to double manufacturing capacity at this plant from 240 to 480 train-sets per annum. The factory has been currently executing orders for Chennai Metro, Montreal (Canada) Metro and Mumbai Metro Line 3.
Alstom recently won a contract with Sydney's (Australia) NRT to supply the rolling stock and signalling system for the next stage of Sydney Metro. For this project, our Sri City facility will make 23 numbers of fully- automated six-car train sets.
Sri City MD Ravindra Sannareddy, has congratulated Alstom and said that they are proud with its 'made at Sri City' products. By Manufacturing metro cars for domestic needs and as well as for exports, the Sri City plant, emerges as a strong marker of Alstom's commitment for 'Make in India' initiative.
Alstom's overall contract with MMRC for Line 3 is worth 452 million Euros. The order includes manufacturing of 31 metro train-sets, each comprising eight fully-furnished modern coaches.
