People throng to markets in large numbers to purchase vegetables

Tirupati: It was a tough day for the denizens who thronged to Rythu Bazaar in Tirupati on Monday, the first day of lockdown announced by the government. With unprecedented rush, it was closed down on the RC Road and temporarily shifted to market yard at Tiruchanur and the buyers had to face problems. In their anxiety to buy the vegetables, people thronged the Rythu Bazaar in large numbers.

Utilising this opportunity, the street side sellers have increased the prices which caused anxiety in several buyers. For instance, tomatoes were sold at Rs.20 initially but have gone up to Rs.50-60 as the clock was ticking. Similarly, onions were sold at Rs.25 per kg in the beginning but have gone up to more than Rs.50 later.

In the mad rush for buying vegetables and essentials, the concept of social distancing was missed totally there.
