Tirupati: The coronavirus is spreading fast in the district and the numbers have been going upwards daily. Within six days, 91 new cases were added to the district tally to take it to 392 which was only 301 on May 31. As 242 patients are cured and discharged by Saturday evening, the number of active cases remain at 146 while four deaths took place till now. During the last 24 hours 26 new cases were added to the district total.

Even though the number of cases is increasing every day, the district officials are not providing the travel history and other details.

People were speculating on the possible reasons for the surge in Covid cases. It was widely felt that those coming from other states like Mumbai and Chennai are responsible for the increase in the number. The people were in dark on how these people are traced and tested on their arrival into the district. There were fears that the cases will go up steeply in the next few days as Tirumala temple and other temples in Srikalahasti and Kanipakam are going to open.

Tirupati is now in third place in the district with 29 cases in which 18 cases are active now as they are reported in the last one week. Srikalahasti (96 cases) and Nagalapuram (37 cases) are ahead of Tirupati. Several doctors were of the view that the cases may increase in thousands by this month-end and it has to be seen how the official machinery faces such grim situation if it happens.
