Women protest against government allowing liquor sale

Tirupati: Responding to the call given by state All India Democratic Women Association (AIDWA) and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), a large number of women and youth on Monday staged a protest in various towns and villages demanding the government to stop sale of liquor on the ground that it is ruining their poor families which are hit hard by lockdown.

The women banging plates and raising slogans demanding the government to provide food and not liquor, expressed their anger against the government for allowing liquor sale in the state. In Tirupati, AIDWA district secretary Sai Lakshmi, who led the protest, said that allowing liquor sale not only affected the poor families but also proving horrible to women as they are facing abuses and physical and mental harassment from their husbands, who in an inebriated condition, resorting to physical violence and also disrupting peace in the family.

She warned that AIDWA along with other women organisations step up the stir to force the government shutdown liquor shops in the interest of the poor in the state.
