Tirupati : Director general of police (DGP) Gautam Damodar Sawang said that safety of women was the top most priority for the police department which was acting fast in investigation of cases involving crimes against women.

Addressing women and students on the subject of Disha Act on the third day of IGNITE (Police Duty Meet) here on Wednesday, the DGP said Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy had given clear direction to act tough against the culprits who indulge in crimes against women.

As part of efforts to speed up cases, he said the government had set up three forensic labs in Vizag, Tirupati and Vijayawada adding that safety of women was possible when all sections of society play their role actively.

"AP police department signed an MoU with Sri Padmavathi Mahila University for preventing crimes against women. We are happy to work with the university over women's issues and their safety related matters," he said.

Sawang advised university vice-chancellor Prof D Jamuna to work at field level over women issues with practical knowledge and called upon the people to understand the issues of women as only then it would be possible to sort out their problems.

He said the government posted one DSP, one Inspector and five SIs in every Disha police station and provided required vehicles, technical equipment and infrastructure. Police are trying to file charge sheets within 21 days by using advanced technology. AP state law department has appointed special prosecutors to speed up the trials of Disha cases in local courts.

Later, women and child welfare secretary A R Anuradha said that the government was continuously monitoring the women and child welfare issues through Chief Minister's Office (CMO). SPMV vice-chancellor Prof Jamuna also addressed the meeting.

The DGP later went around the galleries and interacted with girl students and took selfies with them in the duty meet arena.

Additional DGs Sridhar Rao, Disha SP Deepika Patil, CID SP Radhika , women trainee IPS officers Gauthami Shali, Ajitha, Prerana and girl students took part in the programme.
