Fishermen votes key for victory
Visakhapatnam: The fishermen votes are the key deciding factor in the Visakhapatnam South Assembly Constituency, which is having historical backdrop with several heritage buildings in the segment. The entire segment spreads in the Old Visakhapatnam. Apart from fishermen votes, the Minority and Brahmin votes will also play key role in the constituency.
After formation of Visakhapatnam South constituency in 2009, Congress leader Dronamraju Srinivasa Rao was the first MLA from this segment during 2009-14. In 2014 elections, TDP candidate Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar won the elections against the YSRCP candidate Kola Guruvulu with a majority of 18,000 votes.
With the narrow roads and majority of shore-based locations, the people in Old Town area are facing harrowing time during the rains. The over flooded drainages and rainwater always inundate the areas including Poornamarket, Jalaripeta, Old Town and Gnanapuram.
Another major issue in the segment is severe air and sound pollution from Visakhapatnam Port Trust. With the bulk cargo including coal and iron ore and container handling, people in majority of the areas are suffering with serious health issues. Another important issue is relocation of historic fishing harbour to Bheemili. Thousands of fishermen families are opposing the shifting of Visakhapatnam Fishing Harbour. During the past five years, the VPT has spent huge amounts to minimise the pollution.Hans News Service
