Vijayawada: Malayalees celebrate Onam in city

Vijayawada: Malayalee Association of Vijayawada celebrated 'Onam' with colourful decoration and costumes at Siddhartha College Auditorium on Sunday morning.

Onam festival is a h in Kerala state. It falls on the 22nd Nakshatra Thiruvonam in the Malayalam calendar month of Chingam and this normally comes in the months August–September. According to mythology, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.

Onam is the official state festival of Kerala and this Onam festival will be celebrated with both traditional and folk dances, flower decantation and offerings to God. Vijayawada Malayali Association commenced its programme in the morning with flower arrangement.

Later the members of Malayalee Association were presented many cultural events like dances by women, folk dances and many other items. Sunil, Balachandran, Rajan and Anoop coordinated the event successfully.
