Vijayawada: Airport director Giri Madhusudana Rao assured the AP Transco officials that he would strive to obtain approval from the Airport Authority of India for setting up the high-powered substation on the premises in view of the massive expansion of the airport in the coming days.

AP Transco, Vijayawada zone chief engineer JV Rao along with executive engineer Srinivas Prabhu and Ch Naga Raju called on Airport director Giri Madhusudana Rao on Tuesday.

The chief engineer informed the airport director that the present power supply from Gunadala substation is prone to interruptions and the quality is also poor. He said that if a 132/33KV substation is set up on the premises of the airport, the problem could be solved permanently including uninterrupted power supply.

He said that the quality of power supply would be ensured to the airport-related communication system. It provides scope for the future loads of the airport which is under massive expansion. Once the substation is completed on the airport premises, if airport required power at 132KV, it could be provided, he informed.

The Transco officials said that the substation requires about 3 acres of land on the airport premises for its construction and the Airports Authority could provide it free of cost.

It may be recalled that the airport is undergoing massive expansion including the construction of new terminal building, apron extension, construction of fire station, proposed new air traffic control tower-cum-technical block. In view of all these developments, the substation would play a vital role in supplying reliable power supply and future demands of the airport.
