Vikrama Simhapuri University takes up Akira's method for plantation in Nellore

Nellore: Department of Social Forestry, in association with National Service Scheme (NSS) wing of Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU), has taken up Akira Miawayki's method of artificial forest development on the varsity premises.

Varsity Vice-Chancellor (V-C) Prof R Sudarshana Rao and Registrar Prof A Prasad participated in the plantation programme on Monday at the varsitycampus.

Japanese botanist has pioneered in developing artificial forest within less space of land with less time in the light of drastic encroachment of forests in the world due to growth of urbanisation and huge population and the pilot project was taken up by the State government in Chittoor district.

The V-C said that the forests which are becoming endangered causing huge pollution and heat waves in the region. He expressed happiness over implementing the project.

Forest Officer Suhasini said that among all the universities in the state, VSU has been the first taking up this kind of plantation programme. The programme is being carried out under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), which provides employment to hundreds of rural people. The V-C thanked District Collector Seshagiri Babu, DFO of social forestry wing S Ravishankar for supporting this project.
