Visakhapatnam: Autonomous police authority need of the hour
Visakhapatnam: An autonomous and empowered police authority in the country would give a chance to police department to function in a fair and impartial manner and would totally insulate them from political and bureaucratic interference, said GITAM president M Sribharath here on Wednesday.
He was participating in an interaction programme with the judiciary and police organised by GITAM Dental College and Hospital.
While addressing the doctors and law students, he said today the police department was overburdened and underfunded leading to lack of professionalism at a lower level.
Professional police may go a long way in improving the image and acceptability of the police in the society, he added.
Speaking about raising medico-legal cases Damodaram Sanjivayya, National Law University Vice-Chancellor Prof S Surya Prakash said after the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, came into effect, a large number of patients had filed cases against doctors.
Around 43 lakh cases were pending in various consumer courts in the country.
GITAM School of Law Director Prof Anitha Rao also spoke GITAM Dental College and Hospital principal Prof K Gangadhara Prasad said the principal objective of the medical profession is to render service to humanity.
GITAM Dental College and Hospital vice-principals Dr Y Ravi Shankar and Dr K V Prabhakara Rao participated in the discussions.
