Visakhapatnam: Corona pandemic has taught us a new lifestyle

Visakhapatnam: Amid layoffs and a considerable chunk of income getting slashed, the lifestyle of people has transformed at large in times of corona pandemic.

But on the flip side, the crisis has taught many to alter their budget and limit expenses based on their income.

From the time the corona induced lockdown began, it left a larger dent on the employees working at various sectors, private organisations in particular, as many of them either lost their jobs or have to make do with pay cuts.

There are apparent changes in the way those working in IT sector lead their life, especially the weekends.

There was disposable income to spend on food at restaurants, visiting malls, indulging in impulse buying, hosting a party or unwinding by gulping down a few pegs. No wonder, many end up setting 30 per cent of their salary aside for the weekend fun.

However, ever since the outbreak of pandemic, the weekend splurge has come to a grinding halt. "With work from home continues to be the norm and 25 per cent of the salary being cut, whatever is left is being used to meet emergency requirements. In a way, it is making us to spend consciously as you never know how long we can continue in our jobs, given the volatile situation," says S Kranti, an employee working at a BPO.

Social distancing norm has literally made many to distance themselves from their dear ones. What used to be a status symbol earlier has now been forgotten as people dread to invite guests at home or host lavish get-togethers. "There were kitty parties to attend to along with other get-togethers. However, since March, I have not stepped out of my house to be a part of any party," says D Srilatha, a social worker.

A couple of months ago, even Rs 1 lakh monthly package used to be insufficient for those leading a luxurious life. Now, it is a different scenario altogether. Even with half a pay, many are trying to lead a hassle-free life, curtailing all the unnecessary expenses.

With no cinemas, parties and outdoor activities followed by a minimum amount spent on fuel, employees from various fields are at present able to survive despite the pay cuts.
