Visakhapatnam: Officials strive to get better rank in Swachh Survekshan

Visakhapatnam: The annual survey of cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation Swachh Survekshan (SS) is underway in Visakhapatnam.

GVMC slipped to 23rd rank in SS in 2019 when compared to previous year in the survey due to poor performance in certain areas. Speaking to The Hans India on Monday, GVMC, Public Health Department, Additional Commissioner V Sanyasi Rao shared various initiatives taken up by the GVMC Commissioner to improve their SS ranking for the current year and secure better score among the 4,370 cities in India.

He said as part of SS ranks they have been maintaining toilets at public, private, community, highway and slum areas by providing hygiene and continuous water facilities and tabs were provided for public feedback. ODF++ team has inspected and expressed their satisfaction on the maintenance of toilets. He said for maintaining Garbage-Free City (GFC), they have strengthened the maintaining staff to keep the city clean from any kind of garbage.

In this contest, they have applied for 5-star rating for GFC and expressed confidence to achieve it. They have taken measures to segregate wet and dry garbage and educated about 25,000 people on preparing home composting. Initiatives has been taken by organising awareness programmes to educate people on plastic-free city, he said, adding that they have been monitoring road sweeping, collection of dry and wet garbage and other activity.
