Vizag zoo gets Grant's Zebras

Visakhapatnam: Grant's zebra pair was released in the Indira Gandhi Zoo Park (IGZP) enclosure here on Thursday. Chairman and managing director of Hindustan Shipyard Limited Rear Admiral (Retd) L V Sarat Babu flagged off the release of the zebras to the enclosure in the presence of officials of Waltair Division, East Coast Railways and IGZP.

While the female zebra is three-year-old, the male is of two-year-old. The zebra pair was received from Alipore Zoo, Kolkata as part of the animal exchange programme. Initially, they were kept under quarantine period and were brought to Visakhapatnam by rail transport.

According to zoo curator Yesoda R Bai, special care was taken to lift the crates containing zebras in transit at the railway station before releasing them to housing facility. The animals were kept under close observation during the quarantine period, she informed.
