Wealth out of garbage remains on paper in Srikakulam

Srikakulam: Creation of wealth from garbage has been remaining on paper in the city for the last ten years. Detailed project reports (DPR) were prepared by municipal officials for production of organic manure and power generation from garbage by separating it as dry and wet garbage. A dumping yard was also identified at Patrunivalasa village near Srikakulam city.

Every day about 80 tonnes of garbage is being collected from across the city and it is being dumped at Patrunivalasa yard by tractors and tippers. For processing of garbage in three phases estimations were prepared with Rs 10 crore to separate wet and dry garbage and to generate power and to produce manure i.e. vermin compost. But all these proposals are remaining on papers.

Machinery and sheds were arranged for this purpose but execution works not yet started till today. For collecting and transporting garbage, the Corporation is spending Rs 5 crore every year for salaries of workers and for vehicles. In total, 317 workers were being engaged for collection of garbage and arranged three heavy, five mini tippers and five tractors. Due to dumping of garbage and its burning, the residents of Patrunivalasa are facing respiratory problems. They are also demanding prevention of burning of garbage as the smoke is posing a threat to their health and is leading to respiratory problems.

"We are going to generate power and manufacture organic manure from garbage soon" said Municipal Corporation Commissioner R Sriramulu Naidu.
