AAP questions BBMP’s move to set up waste management council

Bengaluru: Shanthala Dhamle, BBMP campaign in-charge for Aam Aadmi Party has faulted the proposal of city civic body commissioner, N Manjunath Prasad's proposal to set up a separate autonomous council for waste management.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Dhamle said that the city's garbage management came under the health authorities before it was transferred to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). "It was later transferred to the engineering department. After that the trash mafia got into full swing converting the whole Bengaluru into a trash bin. The BBMP has embarked on this task with the garbage mafia that has grown to such an extent as to control the entire government. The garbage management budget has swelled from Rs 150 crore to Rs1,200 crore. Creating another council is only a way of looting people further," she rued.

"This will only make BBMP further weak in terms of power. Water supply, asset management, schools, hospital management and many other duties have been taken away from BBMP. By this the right of the people to question is being seized. The responsibility of public health which belongs to elected representatives but they are washing their hands of this responsibility and have become hands in glove with the mafias," she added.

Dhamle further asked under whose support is commissioner Manjunath Prasad taking such decisions? "Aam Aadmi Party has warned that if the government or the BBMP gets their hands on this task, Aam Aadmi Party will strongly protest this," she stated.
