Three killed as van overturns near Chamarajanagar

Bengaluru: A man, his wife and girl died in a road accident in the early hours of Friday near Chamarajanagar. The accident occurred on National Highway 209 (Bengaluru-Coimbatore), when a Temp Traveller overturned. It is suspected that the driver was over speeding and dozed off at the wheel leading to the accident. The vehicle was carrying 14 passengers from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu to Srirangapatna near Mysuru. While nine passengers suffered minor injuries, one is said to be critical and being treated in the district hospital.

According to the police, the incident occurred near the Suvarnavathi Dam, which is around 15 km away from Chamarajanagar town. The two deceased were identified as Subramanya (65) and Amaravati (55). The identity of the girl is yet to be established.

According to preliminary findings, it's a case of rash driving. "But we are yet to ascertain the details and investigate the incident further. The driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel. We suspect that the driver failed to negotiate the sharp curve as the vehicle was going at a high speed. That part of the road has been recently redone."

The travellers were reportedly on their way to a temple and started from Coimbatore at around 11.30 pm.
