Domestic and export demand for turmeric on consistent rise during Corona period

Domestic and export demand for turmeric is consistently rising because it is seen as an immunity-boosting product. During the Corona period, the demand for turmeric in the country as well as abroad has increased considerably due to its medicinal properties.

Maharashtra is considered as a major hub for turmeric farming. The places where turmeric is being produced in large quantities include Sangli, Hingoli, Basmat, Nanded and Jalgaon. Turmeric from all over the country comes for sale in Sangli market yard.

According to a report published by All India Radio (AIR), currently, 4,000 bags of turmeric are arriving daily in Sangli. Seven lakh bags of 50 kgs turmeric are exported from India every year. This year amidst COVID-19 outbreak 16 lakh bags of 50 kgs turmeric each were exported to various countries across the world.

The country produces about 90 lakh bags of turmeric every year. Out of which, 75 lakh bags get sold while 15 to 20 lakhs of turmeric bags remain in the domestic market. However, due to increased demand for turmeric in the global market this year, the exports are expected to go up by 10 per cent in the new season beginning from January 2021.
