The Indian Railways has taken slew measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus) virus across all the zones. The steps taken include discouragement of citizens from undertaking non-essential journeys by temporarily removing special incentives for many categories like suspension of passenger and some long-distance trains.

Following a steep decline in the number of passengers and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call to observe 'Janta Curfew' tomorrow, on March 22, 2020, the Indian Railways has reduced the number of trains which would be plying on the tracks. In the process, the Railways has cancelled all passenger trains originating from Saturday midnight till 10 pm on Sunday.

Besides, around 1,300 long-distance mail and express trains have also been suspended which were scheduled to commence their journey between 4 am Sunday till 10 pm. All suburban train services to be reduced to a bare minimum as well. Barring few essential runs, suburban train services in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Secunderabad will also be reduced.

The passenger trains services already on run at 7 A.M. on the day will be allowed to run to the destinations. The order directed all the Divisions to short terminate the empty trains.

All trains which are already on the run during these hours will, however, continue their services. Railways have urged people to ensure the running status of trains before reaching stations as occupancy is being closely monitored and modifications are done to meet the actual requirement.
