Onion Prices: Centre reduces stock holding limit to Retailers and Wholesalers by fifty per cent

Due to incessant rains throughout the country, the onion crops were damaged heavily; thereby, the prices have skyrocketed.

There was a discussion held in the Parliament on Tuesday on increasing Onion prices where a member of the house raised the topic of imposing uniform rate across the country.

Responding to a query, Minister of State for Consumer Affairs Danve Raosaheb Dadarao said ruled out the proposal to provide onions at a uniform rate. He had replied to Lok Sabha in written format saying that there no such proposal.

However, the onion prices gradually increasing across major cities of the country. The average selling price stood at Rs 75 per kg on Tuesday (3 December), while the maximum rate of Rs 140 per kg was recorded in Port Blair.

The government also decreased the hold limit by 50 per cent for both retailers and wholesalers to halt the rising prices of onions.

Apart from imposing stock holding limits, the government has already banned exports and instead has decided to import 1.2 lakh tonnes of onions for domestic supply.

On the other hand, there is a severe uproar on the increasing prices in the state of Andhra Prades. However, the Jagan's government is taking measures to sell the onions for Rs. 25.

The Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan who visited onion stockyard in Kadapa took a dig at the government for making people stand in queues to purchase the Onions.
