SBI branches are on alert; AIIMS loses over ₹12 crores, a prey of banking fraud

NEW DELHI: AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Science) has to account in SBI bank and fell prey to banking fraud. From two bank account of AIIMS in SBI bank over ₹12 crores has been stolen. The fraudsters have allegedly used different "cloned cheques" in some past month, found by official sources.

"The payments released or stopped can straight away be attributed to the failure of control mechanism in SBI bank and its branches. Hence, the loss doesn't pertain to AIIMS," the AIIMS stated in a report.

The money has been drained off from the AIIMS bank account from SBI's non-home branches, sources told PTI.

AIIMS administration seeking an investigation into the scam by approaching the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police.

According to an official, AIIMS asked the bank to deposit the stolen amount as they stated; while clearing cheques at non-home branches, SBI has failed to follow verification protocol.

The fraudsters first attempted to withdraw over ₹20 crores from an SBI's Dehradun non-home branch. While in the second attempt they attempted in the SBI branch of Mumbai to stole ₹9 crores, sources said.

In which ₹7 crores was withdrawn from the institute's main account, operated by the AIIMS Director and ₹5 crores was withdrawn from the account held by the Dean, Research of AIIMS.
