Coronavirus Dents Angrezi Medium First Day Collections, Homi Mulls Rerelease

Update: 2020-03-15 00:50 IST

Coronavirus is a bad time to release movies. While most states are going into a lockdown with citizens asked to stay indoors to avoid the spread of the deadly disease which hs so far claimed over 5000 lives across the globe, a few movie makers went ahead and released their movies not knowing what they were getting into.

One such movie which had created a lot of hype and raised expectations of the audience hit theatres on Friday. Even though the movie opened to rave reviews, the film failed to set the cash registers ringing at the box office. The movie we are referring to is Bollywood flick Angrezi Medium which stars Irfan Khan. The movie earned positive reviews from film critics. However, the collections failed to come in, thanks to the virus scare that has gripped the country.

In the wake of the new disease and the havoc it's causing, Angrezi medium director Homi Adajania took to social media to announce that he had decided to re-release the movie after things had settled down at a later date.

The government has already clamped down on malls and theatres and issued guidelines asking people not to step out of their house unless in case of an emergency. Under the circumstances it won't make sense to have a movie in a few theatres across the country where there is yet to be any trace of the virus.

So, how much did the movie collect on its first day? The trade pundits had predicted before the release that the movie will rack up at least 4.50 crors on its opening. But owing to several theatres being closed following government orders, the movie managed to collect just Rs 3.85 crore on its first day.

Angrezi Medium stars Dimple Kapadia, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Pankaj Tripathi and Deepak Dobriya in key roles. The movie will rerelease at a late date.
