Sushant Singh Rajput's suicide has re-emphasised the importance of mental health. While actress Deepika Padukone who had once shared her side of the story about battling depression in her life, stressing the need for being there for those who reach out for help, former minister Milind Deora has come out in the open about his challenges with mental health.

In an interview with a TV channel, Milind has said that he suffered intense depression and had Suicidal thoughts for two years. Calling it a stigmatized condition, Milind said that he somehow managed to get through the condition with help from family and friends. But he said when it got severe and he thought nobody understood him, he sought the professional help of a psychiatrist. He also termed the experience terrifying as nobody seemed to get what he was going through and wondered what was wrong with him.

The senior Congress leader also said that there were huge misconceptions surrounding mental health.

Recalling the days when his career was going great guns, he said he was a successful politician and had no reason to be depressed about. But he goes on to add that ultimately people must realise that the brain is an organ which also needs nutrition, sleep and meditation too as you care for other parts of the body.

He says that politics and entertainment industry is quite open and people need not shy away from seeking help. He says how politicians from old school of thought still believe that their disease or weakness is something not to be spoken about in public and continue to attend political rallies and parliament sessions till their last breath. But he says that seeking professional help will help a lot.
