Don’t enjoy much playing Mr Bean

London: The 65-year-old star Rowan Atkinson  – who originally created the iconic titular character for his beloved sitcom – is poised to don the famous suit and tie for another big screen appearance after the success of the animated spin-off's third series in 2019, but he hopes his time in the role is nearing its end.

Speaking to Radio Times, he said: 'Having made an animated TV series, we're now in the foothills of developing an animated movie for Mr Bean – it's easier for me to perform the character vocally than visually. 'I don't much enjoy playing him.

The weight of responsibility is not pleasant. I find it stressful and exhausting, and I look forward to the end of it.' However, it's nothing personal – Rowan admitted he doesn't really like 'making anything', although there is one exception there.

'I don't actually like the process of making anything – with the possible exception of Blackadder, because the responsibility for making that series funny was on many shoulders, not just mine,' he explained.

Asked whether Edmund could return for a fifth series – which would be the first since 1989's Blackadder Goes Forth – it seems there is a sliver of hope for fans. 'It's certainly not impossible,' Rowan said.

'That's about as optimistic as I can be, and I'd rather not speculate on when it could be set. 'But Blackadder represented the creative energy we all had in the 80s. To try to replicate that 30 years on wouldn't be easy.'

With his impressive legacy, Rowan has plenty of experience in the world of television comedy, but he insisted he isn't really into any UK series nowadays.
