Meet the heroine of Malayalam cinema's first adult film
Back then in the late 1970s, it was a bold move. Inadvertently, it also opened the floodgates for what was then known as 'soft porn' films from Malayalam, which dominated the dubbing circuits of India for over two decades.
The reason was its liberal skin show by prevailing standards. Released on March 3, 1978, in Kerala and in the next one year or so across the nation, 'Avalude Ravukal' (Her Nights) featuring actress Seema in the central role was directed by I V Sasi is known for his experimental approach. Based on a book written by Alleppey Sheriff, the movie explored life through a teenage prostitute's eyes intertwining it with that of the three men who interact with her. After a dull start, it became a sleeper hit and collected enough at the box-office. In Telugu, the film was dubbed and released as ' Aame Kadha', a successful venture.
Seema, born Shanthakumari Nambiar became a sensation for obvious reasons. She continued to work with I V Sasi for over 30 films after the 1978 release, also marrying him during that phase. Winner of many State-level film awards, Seema was active once again from the late 1990s and is presently seen in a few films now and then. She turns 63 today.
