On playing a transwoman

Update: 2019-06-15 22:58 IST

Critically acclaimed for her performances and choice of films; the woman with a mind of her own, and an actress who avoids the rate race, Konkana Sen Sharma chooses to do only those films that 'relate' to her sensibilities. From her National Award winning role Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002) to films like Page 3 (2005), Omkara (2006), Life in a...Metro (2007), Wake Up Sid (2009), Talvar (2015) and Lipstick Under My Burkha (2017), she has displayed immense restrain and sensibility as an actress, be it in taking up a role or giving it her unique characterisation.

"I was very moved by the script', she says about her recently released short film 'A Monsoon Date' directed by Tanuja Chandra in which she plays a transwoman. During a quick chat, she states her reason to accept the film, which is an amazing tribute to transgender community, and her plans for digital entertainment space.

What did you like the most in the film?

"It is a short film. It has an effect as a whole. However, I think the end has a huge impact. I like the black and white stills that were shown during the end credits and love the way the photographs celebrate the body of the woman. It is very unusual. And they are some of the best pictures I have seen. They show both strength and vulnerability in one frame.

Why did you choose to do the film?

I was very moved by the script. This was the chief reason for me to accept the role. And, I have never done this type of character before.

What is your criteria for accepting a film?

There is no one thing. I just try to see what the director is trying to say, and if I can relate to that, then I do the film. I also see how well the script is written.

What about your other films that are yet to release?

I am working with some lovely women. I am doing Alankrita Srivatsava's 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare'. It's an amazing film and I enjoyed working in the film. This time I got to collaborate with Bhoomi. She is such a talented young actress. I am also working with Seema Pahwa for her film 'Pind Daan'. It is a happy coincidence that the last three films that I acted in are with women directors.

How is digital space helping cinema?

It's really wonderful that there is so much of online content. For formats like short films, it gives a lot of freedom in terms of content and style of film making; one can do a lot of experimentation

Can we expect you to work in a web series?

I have to say that I have got some interesting offers for web series, both for acting and direction. I am definitely interested in directing. But I am still contemplating.
