Is wearing a short dress an invite to rape?

Update: 2019-05-09 23:24 IST

In Gurgaon, an incident took place , a couple of weeks ago, the recorded video of which has been doing rounds in social media where a group of young women confronted the middle-aged woman after she allegedly asked the men present at the restraunt to rape one of them as she was wearing as short skirt.

Later, after confrontation when the women asked an apology from the old woman for her statement and warned her if she did not, the video will be posted online, she refused to pay heed to them rather continued the rant and further showcased her diminutive mindset.

So what was told which was so offensive that the video has gone viral?

The woman says that if you are wearing short clothes you are encouraging men to rape you and further tells the parents to "kontrol" their kids from wearing such clothes.

It caused much outrage when she reflected the narrow mindset blaming women and justifying the rape culture in India.

When there are still people out there who believe men who rape women are right in their place. no wonder the country does not see the number of cases coming down.

Is sharing the video a solution?

It's good to express your opinion and voice out for what is right but sharing the video of a woman speaking utter nonsense may not be a great idea, opine some who do protest against such patriachial views but think such act was unnecessary, while some think it is essential for people to see the irrationality of such opinions.

Sharing the video just reflects the mortifying thoughts people have in our country but what needs to be done is not to demean a person's dignity rather educate them on what is right and what is wrong.

We need to understand that many come from a lifestyle where patriarchy is the foundation and unconsciously they have absorbed it as the right way of living.

By educating them we take a progressive step. It might take some time to unlearn patriarchy but what's important is that the root behind such existing crimes should be cut off; enabling a society free from such fears and accusations.
