Periods pride
With an initiative to educate slum and rural teenage girls about menstrual health and hygiene management, a non-profit, Green Pencil Foundation, organised a survey cum campaign on Menstrual Hygiene For teenage girls in Z.P.H School Malkajgiri ,Hyderabad. In starting a survey is conducted by the to know the root level challenges that teenage girls are facing in their menstrual hygiene management. In a survey around 100 girls participated from 8th to 10th standard, During the survey we found out of every 10 girls , 7 are hesitant to share about the periods to male family members of their own family. In the survey we also found out that out of each 10 teenage girls in Hyderabad are not properly aware about the periods during their first period. We are developing in technology and one of the growing nations.
This is a topic of attention for our society that considering periods as a taboo is not a better deal with the women's section. It's a question for us as well where one side we are talking about women empowerment and other side girls in our society don't have rights to speak openly about their periods .During a survey out of each 10 girls , 7 responded as periods are not good for their health. Thus this is the biggest question for us, that being a society that we are teaching them , we have to give them the rights to talk about periods openly in the classroom , with family and friends. We have to consider it in the syllabus after 5th standard onwards so that teenage girls should be aware before their first periods.
During the survey Sandy Khanda, who is founder and campaign manager In Green Pencil Foundation said we are targeting to organise and expand this campaign in all government schools and slum areas In city to educate the teenage girls about Menstrual Hygiene Management.
Sandy Khanda, also stated that this is the biggest campaign run by the foundation in many Indian states and cities including Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune , Bangalore, Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. Trisha Panjala who is the mayor of the foundation, added a point that the Government needs to add Menstrual Hygiene Management syllabus and mandatory above the age of 9 years to educate about Menstrual Hygiene Management. So that they can easily cope with the periods and manage themselves in a better way. During the campaign, volunteer Samina also explained how to deal with the cramps during the Menstruation Cycle. It was a wonderful response from all participants and volunteers. Through this survey cum campaign they want everyone to be part of this change , because change always begins with us. It's our responsibility to talk with our mother, sisters and friends openly about their periods.
