Ways to clean your jewellery during lockdown

We clean ourselves every day and our wardrobes among other things. However, a critical element that many of us forget and one that can be the hotspot for germs is our accessories, especially jewellery. All of us might have noticed our jewellery getting darker when we don't use it for a long time with some blemishes on them. Even the stone ornaments tend to gather a dusty layer on them. Now that all of us are under lockdown with time on our hands to do a lot of cleaning, let us turn our focus to jewellery. After all, this is as essential as cleaning our hands. We spoke to Deepshikha Gupta, senior VP design, Melorra and she shares some tips that you can follow.

Wash with lukewarm water

Use a mild soap and lukewarm water to clean jewellery. Dilute the liquid soap or dishwashing liquid in water, soak your gold jewellery in it for 20 minutes. Place it on a dry towel and allow it to dry.

If your jewellery has gemstones or enamel, don't soak it in warm water, instead rub the gemstones with a clean dry cloth. Clean the rest of the piece with a damp piece of cloth.

Once you are done, make sure to wash your hands following the 20-second rule.

Brush some, clean some

If your jewellery has engravings, take a soft-bristle toothbrush and clean the engravings that have become dirty.

Given below are a few key things to remember while cleaning since they can damage your precious stones:

No sanitisers

An alcohol-based hand rub can damage jewellery especially gemstones. Avoid using a sanitizer to prevent damage to the surface.

Take jewellery off before washing

Whether you're washing your face or hands, it's best to remove the jewellery first. Germs, soap and even lotion can collect under jewellery. Grime can also accumulate behind the stones and diamonds. It is therefore best to take them off before cleaning.

In conclusion

These simple terms will ensure that your jewellery remains clean and that you remain free of any infections or diseases. Above anything, make sure you follow protocols, stay home, give priority to hygienic practices, and use this lockdown phase as an opportunity.
