Can the new generation stay away from their phones?

The growing up years in the 1960s and 70s is well remembered by me as a golden age in my life because we were all brought up to follow certain rudimentary principles strictly in order to be successful in life later. Consequently, each day began after meticulous planning so that nothing is missed. As I grew, this helped me to concentrate better on learning in college while yearning to acquire more knowledge on varied subjects of interest.

In fact, with no mobile phones existing or modern gadgets within reach of middle-class and TV telecast for a few hours in a day beaming only Doordarshan channels, I and my classmates and friends kept ourselves engaged in productive and creative things for career advancement. Recounting the happenings at the end of each day, I felt elated at the way my life was progressing. But the present generation having access to smart phones and modern gadgets within easy reach and more money than required in their pockets look for quick solutions without much hard work.

As they think their whole world revolves around Android phones, their minds get diverted from studies and are engrossed in watching cheap data and dirty stuff dished out on the social media throughout the day. Unmindful of the consequences, youngsters not only spend hours daily but take pride in discussing with friends about the contents in social media neglecting studies. It is distressing to note that various surveys show that average time spent by a youth is about six to eight hours a day on mobile phones.

Moreover, social media spread is vast and increasing by the day due to people deeply involved in it. One is not sure how the young of today and tomorrow are going to build their lives and make it purposeful with the present style of living. During my youth, I kept away from watching mindless films and taking harmful products because it dulls the cognitive brain and prevents one from thinking logically.

However, I am unable to fathom what real joy it gives to the modern youth who are addicted to cigarettes, drugs and liquor when it eats away a part of their life. I still remember how cool and calm my generation and earlier ones went about attending to their daily chores without any complaints in the absence of mobile phones, social media, modern gadgets unlike today's youth enjoying all comforts of life at home and still getting addicted to various stuff that kills their motivation and energy to set career goals, essential to come out successful in life.

In a nutshell, earlier generations cared about both national and society issues and reacted emotionally in order to make the nation rich and humble. Also, they fought for a just cause sincerely and tirelessly till they achieved their objectives. But most of the youth of today only bother to react to sensational news but lack ability to think, reason or argue logically. Like times have changed, the youth of today also need to change by thinking rationally that helps build up his/her life instead of wasting life by getting addicted to phones and cheap entertainment.

Overall, as the priority lies in setting goals, staying motivated and working towards the goal to ensure success, therefore they must without a second thought keep away from phone until they build up a good life for themselves by finding a way out.
