Hyderabad: Who doesn't dream of adding beautiful strokes in their signatures and handwriting?

In an era of smart writing, the craze for calligraphy is still alive. Parents and teachers of several schools in Hyderabad extend their support to the ancient visual art as it not only helps children to enhance their handwriting but also help students to balance and control emotions like patience, anger and building concentration capacity.

In the decade of auto text to speech, the visual art related to writing is still marking its priority. "With the latest alphabetic writing systems, typewriters (formerly) and printers (now) have taken over much of the work calligraphers used to do.

Calligraphy can be a good hobby for children to soothe themselves in their free time and one can write fast and beautifully in examinations if they have learned calligraphy.

For a student having good calligraphy knowledge takes 6 to 9 minutes to write a whole page of 27 to 30 lines, whereas others take around 15 to 18 minutes to complete one page, " said N Hima Bindhu, English Teacher, Secunderabad Public School.

Parents in Hyderabad having the same views on calligraphy, say, "We want our children to show interest in calligraphy and expect them to learn it at their early age as it not only improves their handwriting but also builds a lot of patience in them," said T Anil and T Sathya vani, Entrepreneurs and parents of two children residing in Mothi Nagar.

Not only children, we also can learn calligraphy in our spare time and can practice it as a hobby for soul satisfaction, added T Anil. "Calligraphy is something which can be selected as a career.

It is a unique profession that presents an opportunity to unleash one's artistic calibre and benefits for those who have an artistic mind along with a crazy creative bend and passion for lettering," said Mohammed Abdul Gaffar, In-charge and senior calligraphy instructor at India's oldest calligraphy Institute, Idara-E-Adabiyat-E-Urdu in Panjagutta.

Learning calligraphy is not hard, but it is harder to master the art, it is a skill which takes six to nine months and requires at least three months of practice to learn the basic strokes of calligraphy.

We are offering a 12-month diploma course in calligraphy free of cost at the institute. Any age group above five years can join the course in June every year, he added.

Currently, the institute has 25 students and Abdul Gaffar has taught around 9,000 students in his entire life and is still counting.

He is also gearing up for the online calligraphy classes soon. Calligraphy helps to choose a righteous path," said G Vamshi, a 2nd year graduation student of Sharadha Degree College.

Calligraphy needs some practice in the beginning until you get the hang of the art but you will need years and years of practice until you are a master at it, says a calligraphy student Wajidha Tabbassum.
