Hyderabad: Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) is one of the premier research institutes of the country and is entirely funded by the Government of India, under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). In keeping with its mandate of meeting the scientific and technological challenges of the 21st century, TIFR has established a campus in Hyderabad. A detailed project proposal was submitted to the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). This proposal was approved by the AEC in February 2019, to the tune of Rs. 896.09 crores towards developing TIFR Hyderabad for the time period of 2019-2024. The campus is being set up on 200+ acres of land that was given by the Government of Telangana.

Pending the above approval, TIFR Hyderabad had initiated research activities in the interdisciplinary sciences. The broad areas of research include theoretical physics and chemistry, soft matter, materials science, synthetic chemistry, NMR spectroscopy, molecular neuroscience, immunology, cell biology, molecular genetics, biophysical chemistry, laser physics, molecular biophysics, and mechanobiology.

In due course of time, TIFR Hyderabad has engaged in successful collaborations and scientific discussions with the following institutions in Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad, CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology, Birla Institute of Technology & Science, CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Indian Institute of Technology, National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd. TIFR Hyderabad plans to initiate major research activities along the themes of 'Life-Light-Matter'.

Apart from the basic sciences, the research shall lay importance on making inroads into the translational sciences that will be a direct benefit to the society. In addition, the Science Media Centre and Innovation Hub shall be set up.

The institute offers PhD programmes- both post-Masters and post-Bachelors degrees. Currently, there are 25 faculty members, 95 research scholars, and 33 post-doctoral fellows. It is projected that, in future, this strength will reach 250 faculty members, 1500 research scholars and 500 post-doctoral fellows.

While providing cutting-edge research opportunities for graduate students, TIFR Hyderabad is grooming the next generation of scientific and technological leadership. They will be the future researchers and teachers in various scientific institutes and universities in India. This is essential given the growing status of India internationally and the demographic aspect.
