MITS student bags Innovation Award

The student’s invention is a device which would reduce the risk of heart disease

Hyderabad: B Mallikarjuna Reddy, B Tech final year Mechanical Engineering student of Madanapalle Institute of Technology &Science received the Gandhian Young Technological Innovation Award from Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Harsh Vardhan. The Principal of the Institute, Dr C Yuvaraj said at a Press meet on Thursday. The awards ceremony organised by the Society for Research and Initiatives for Sustainable Technologies and Institutions (SRISTI) was held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

He said that the award was given to the student for his work in the programme, which showcases the best research by young scientists at the national level. B Mallikarjuna Reddy explained his research paper entitled "Developing Lab scale Magneto - Mechanical Experimental Setup Predict the Plaque Growth of Human Heart Coronary Arterial Layer System". The main theme of this research work is for coronary heart disease caused by the growth of plaque in the heart arterial wall layers.

Plaque is the fatty (waste) substance that forms in between the heart arterial wall layers. The growth of this plaque at the interface of the layers blocks the blood flow and finally leads to heart attack or stroke. Identification of plaque growth at the interface is one of the major challenges for the biomedical research community.

There are many Nano mechanical devices to identify plaque growth, the student explained. In India, every one out of six men and one in ten women die from heart disease and the death rate issignificantly increasing day by day. According to present estimates, India will soon have the highest number of heart disease cases in the world. According to the Indian Heart Association, 50 per cent of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 50 years of age, and 25 per cent of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 40 years of age he added.

Mallikarjuna Reddy and Assistant professor of the college, Dr G Mallikarjuna Chari have jointly invented this new device in the biomedical field in the college, said the Principal. "With this device, we have the opportunity to reduce the risk of heart disease by treating the percentage of heart disease," he said. The Principal said that the cost of making this device was about one lakh fifty thousand rupees only. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu congratulated the student on this occasion. The student was presented with an appreciation certificate and a memento. The Management of the College, Principal, Dr C Yuvaraj, Head of Department, Dr Suryanarayana Raaju, other faculty and students extended their greetings to the faculty and student.
