Automatic machine to separate wet and dry waste in 243 BBMP wards

Update: 2023-01-03 23:18 IST

Bengaluru: New contractors are being appointed for waste collection and disposal in 243 wards of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). In addition to this, Bangalore Solid Waste Management limited has decided to install an automatic waste sorting machine to separate the garbage that is stored in blackspots and is collected without sorting.

Over 4,500 to 5,000 tons of mixed waste is generated daily under BBMP. More than 3,500 tonnes of that waste is wet waste. BBMP has told the public to separate wet, dry and sanitary waste while collecting the waste generated from the houses.

Also, this rule has been strictly followed from several years. Contractors were also told not to collect waste if not segregated from any households. The waste collection contractor's term has been completed a few months ago, the process of waste segregation and collection is not going on adequately.

Thus, mixed waste is accumulating everywhere. In addition to that, mixed waste is also accumulating in blackspots in the city. Due to this, waste management is becoming a problem. In order to overcome this problem, BBMP has decided to purchase a machine to separate the mixed waste into wet, dry and sanitary waste.

Bangalore Solid Waste Management limited has planned to purchase an automatic waste sorting machine. Around Rs 7.75 crores have been earmarked for it and the tender process for machine suppliers has also been initiated. Accordingly, an automatic waste sorting machine capable of sorting 5,000 kg of mixed waste per hour will be purchased. Also, an average of 40 tonnes of mixed waste has to be segregated in each shift.

The automatic waste sorting machine will sort the waste in three stages. 50 mm size waste, 50 to 300 mm and more than 300 mm size waste will be segregated. In addition, magnets are installed to separate iron and other materials. As those magnets move through the compost, they will pull the iron objects with force. Also, in composting, wet and dry wastes are separated on an air basis. The wet waste is then treated and used to produce fertilizer or methane gas. Among the dry waste, mainly plastic is sent to cement factories or recycling factories.

System for ODF control

The contractor supplying the automatic solid waste sorting machine has to bring the machine to the place designated by the Bangalore Solid Waste Management limited and set it up for operation. Also, it is the contractor's responsibility to ensure that it remains trouble-free for 3 months. Also, if there is any problem with the machine even after that, its repair and maintenance will be the responsibility of the contractor. Also, the contractor has to make a system to prevent bad odour caused by solid waste and collect waste water in the machine installation unit.
