According to a recent study by Rice univeristy in conjunction with Columbia University and the university of North Carolina, it found out that people who relocate to a new country tend to increase self concept clarity, meaning those who choose to live in a new country tend to have a better sense of self than those who don't.

Moving abroad and starting over in a new country is one of the most terrifying yet exhilarating adventures ever. Life as you know it will change- and we're not just talking addresses and laundry detergent.

A team of people found out that living abroad triggered " self -discerning reflections in which people grappled with different cultural values and norms of their home and host cultures. By reflecting on themselves and their own cultures they were about to discover which values and norms define who people are.

whenever you move to a new city, state or overseas to another country, you'll probably feel the effects of change. When moving overseas, to a place where nothing around you is familiar and you feel completely disoriented, you'll experience culture shock. Culture shock often sets in gradually, and sometimes, can result in depression and withdrawal. It can feel like you'll never be happy again you may want to pack up and head back home. But before you do, see how you can help ease and stress that often accompanies moving to another country and culture. Our studies demonstrate that living abroad affects the fundamental structure of the self concept by enhancing its clarity.

The team even noted the German Philospher Hermann Von Keyserling, who wrote in the epigraph to his 1919 book " The Travel Diary of a Philosopher" that "the shortest path to oneself leads around the world".

Living abroad has plenty of incredible benefits including getting to travel to new places, meet new people, and try new things, But, perhaps the greatest benefit of all is the brand- new sense of self you'll discover along the way.

And this isn't us just waxing poetic about living overseas. It's a scientifically proven fact.
