Ganesh Chaturthi, in Hinduism, 10-day celebration denoting the introduction of the elephant-headed god Ganesha, the divine force of success and intelligence. It starts on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of the long stretch of Bhadrapada (August–September), the 6th month of the Hindu schedule.

Toward the beginning of the celebration, symbols of Ganesha are set on brought stages up in homes or in extravagantly decorated open-air tents. The worship starts with the pranapratishtha, a custom and a ritual to summon life into the idols, trailed by shhodashopachara, or the 16 different ways of paying tribute. In the midst of the reciting of Vedic hymns from religious writings like the Ganesh Upanishad, the idols are anointed with red sandalwood paste and yellow and red flowers. Ganesha is likewise offered coconut, jaggery, and 21 modaks (sweet dumplings), viewed as Ganesha's preferred nourishment.

At the conclusion of the celebration, the idols are carried to nearby streams in immense parades joined by drumbeats, reverential singing, and dancing. There they are immersed, a custom symbolizing Ganesha's back home voyage to Mount Kailas—the abode of his parents, Shiva and Parvati.

Ganesh Chaturthi expected the idea of a function open festival when the Maratha ruler Shivaji (c. 1630–80) utilized it to empower patriot conclusion among his subjects, who were battling the Mughals. In 1893, when the British restricted political gatherings, the celebration was restored by the Indian patriot pioneer Bal Gangadhar Tilak. Today the celebration is commended in Hindu people group worldwide and is especially mainstream in Maharashtra and parts of western India.
