Welcome to the journey of Yoga

Update: 2019-06-21 12:53 IST

Did you all know there's a legit, international day solely dedicated to Yoga?

In my world (and in many of yours) every day is dedicated to yoga, but on June 21st, the world will recognize and come together in the name of YOGA. Let me repeat that real quick..the ENTIRE world will take a moment to show the yoga practice some LOVE!

You + me we need to be a part of this movement without asking any questions asked, let's support the cause!

If this yoga day talk is alien sounding to you, let me divulge a bit more, so that we're all on the same page.

This is the 5th annual celebration of yoga.

It has and always will only occur on 21 st June

It's a day of recognition declared by the UN General Assembly

The original proposal to create this special day include the quote below, which perfectly sums up why we love yoga so damn much-

" Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. This tradition is 5000 years old. It embodies the unity of mind and body, thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help us deal with climate change. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day." - Narendra Modi (UN Assembly).

Now that you're all in the know of yoga day.. let's chat on how can we do our part...

1 Practice Yoga - duh!

This one's an obvious idea, But I have to cover it.

I really don't know how much time you have, but you have to connect yourself with breath with movement on June 21st. Step onto your mat, onto the ground, or simply sit up taller in your office chair and CONNECT.

Find a cozy place, probably a sweet spot of yours... You know what place I'm talking about, I know you do.

As a nation, as a community, as a group of collective consciousness, we can and will raise the vibration of this world with our breath and movement. Believe in the magic of yoga, it's there, waiting to be tapped into!

2. Today is a day to Change your Facebook Profile Pic

I really love this idea and hope you too will

Just like people have changed their profile pics for their devastating attacks on Paris or the same-sex marriage right, the yoga community is offering up the same opportunity.

The idea behind the overlay is to spread the message of yoga, invite new people to the practice, and strengthen the current community.

let's hope the social media campaign catches on and spreads like wildfire. The more yogis, the better off this world is...

3. Invite a friend to Yoga

As I said above, the more the yogis in this world the better...

And the only way to increase/ strengthen the community is to add to it. This is where our current yogis come into the equation.

Invite a friend or colleague to take part and practice alongside you. Invite anyone and everyone, be there to soften the first time jitters, and to experience the magic that will take place.

....That magic being- Connecting back to oneself, feeling the body again or for the first time ever, and creating shapes never imagined.

4. Give Back

The yoga -to-do is my biggest focus... yet for some reason, I rarely find myself doing it.

Giving back is a conundrum, we know we're supposed to do it, the act of it genuinely makes us feel good when push comes to shove- we cherish our free time and then we use it on ourselves.

This is the time ...where we have to give it back to our community.

♦ Lead a free yoga camp in your community

♦ Donate your time to your local community, whatever movement or organization interests you, go do that!

5. Find an event near you

And lastly, there's an event celebrating International Yoga Day, for the love of Yoga- go be a part of it.

Grab a friend, Family friend, yoga studio member, or go by yourself and participate. As I've said numerous times now, the stronger our breath the movement is. The more we can help change this the world through our yoga practice.
