World Environment Day 2020: It's time to pay attention to plant, animal species to Save the planet
World Environment Day is also known as Eco Day, which aims to inculcate the awareness among the people about the ecosystem and environment, that is being drifted towards disruption due to pollution and unwanted hazards prevailing in the atmosphere thanks to globalization. The World Environment Day falls explicitly on the fifth day of June every year.
Its main aim is to spread awareness, encourage people to require steps to guard the environment across 150 countries. Amid coronavirus pandemic, the program, which usually celebrated with a large number of people flocking to the roads to the campaign will now be low key affair just sticking to the online campaign. However, digital celebrations won't lessen its significance.
While coming to the theme for the World Environment Day 2020, it was decided to be 'Celebrate Biodiversity'. According to the theme, 1 million plants and animal species are shrinking day by day so, the theme Biodiversity has got its importance on this appeal. According to the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP), 2020 is the critical year for national commitments towards preserving and restoring biodiversity as the UN Decade (2021-2030) on Ecosystem Restoration is intended to scale up the restoration of degraded and destroyed ecosystems massively."
Going with the theme Biodiversity, without it, there is no life on the Earth. Biodiversity describes the varied species on Earth, including the 8 million plant and animal species… All these combinely bring a genetic diversity in the ecosystem. So, protecting nature along with working hard to improve the number of near-to extinction species is much needed.
Every individual should participate and lend his hand to do something to nature. We are there as nature is still breathing fresh air… But the minute it is gone, we are no more and are dead forever!!! The abundant foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink also count and take a toll on nature.
The World Environment Day 2020 is going to be hosted by Colombia in South America in partnership with Germany. For the last year's Environment Day, the host nation was China with the theme "Beat Air Pollution", which was chosen due to around 7 million people were killed annually due to air pollution.
Going back into the history, this day was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 on the first day of the Stockholm Conference (the fifth day of June) on the Human Environment that resulted in discussions on the mixing of human interactions and environment. After two years of discussions and deliberations.
The planet Environment Day was first celebrated in 1974 with the theme "Only One Earth." the thought of various countries hosting World Environment Day began in 1987.
