Indian economy has gone into the ICU

Update: 2020-05-10 02:08 IST

The corona pandemic has affected us badly, disrupting activities of all from individuals to industries. It has put enormous pressure on public health as well as on public wealth.

As the virus is known to be deadly on persons with weak immune system, the unabated pandemic proves to be dearly with weak economies. So Indian economy has gone into to ICU now. It takes a long time to recover that too with the help of good support and care.

Here are few points to ponder over:

1.As the end of pandemic is not seen in near future, the country and people should be prepared to live with it. There should be some readjustments and reforms in war strategies against the pandemic at least to minimise the damage, let alone conquering the situation.

2. At individual level the norms of social distancing, personal hygiene, hand wash and mask wearing should become routine hereafter. A disciplined life style that boosts health and immunity should be learned. Social etiquette like not spitting on roads should be followed.

3. The government has an unenviable challenge ahead in bringing back the derailed economy to right tracks. As the lock down cannot be extended for eternity, it has to find ways to open the lock with minimal damage balancing lives and livelihoods.

4. The agricultural sector cannot wait further defying the seasons. Any delay in decision makings can result in loss of food security. It should be allowed to function as usual with necessary precautions in place.

5. The government should try to make use of the situation. It should concentrate on expanding pharma industry in order to cater the needs of India and world. It's promising in view of growing demand for affordable medicine.

6. Internally the universal public distribution system and social security for unorganised sector should be strengthened.

7. Public health should get more funds from the government. A minimum budget of 4 percent of GDP should be allocated to the sector and the primary health wing do need focus to better the people's lives.

No doubt, India is capable of overcoming the pandemic storm sooner or later, but it has to make use of the opportunity to get strong internally and externally;economically and socially.
