BJP's spectacular performance

The BJP has spectacularly risen its footprint in the GHMC region from 4 (2016) seats to 48 (2020) seats and gained foothold where it had none before. Many exit polls gave a maximum of 30 seats to the party, but it is now clear that they did not catch the people's pulse.

Government employees have shown their strong rancour to TRS government. It corroborates that not just teachers, but also in other departments majority employees voted against the government policies which was clearly evinced in postal ballots. In a timely and welcoming move, the High Court of Telangana has suspended a late-night notice issued by SEC which says not just Swastika mark, but other marks can also be accepted as voted. This decision by the court was needed for fair counting. It was a municipal election like never before, with the two-week campaign witnessing the spectacle, colour and rhetoric reserved for State and national elections.

The result witnessed is a clear mandate for change and referendum on ruling party. It certifies that hubris and oratorical artistry will no longer sway the voters. Though Mayor will be of other party, the BJP emerged as the star of the show, having nothing to lose, took big leap at the cost of the ruling party.

Civic poll results send message of disenchantment

Partisanship in reaching political goals is no vice. Political battles make the country stronger when they are fought with integrity and purpose. But political viciousness is no virtue. All the parties fighting the elections taking it a challenging one leaving no stone unturned. The BJP in an upbeat mood after winning the by-election to the Dubbaka Assembly seat recently and Hyderabadis' disenchantment with the government's handling of recent flood havoc in the State capital is in belligerent spirits to win the hearts of 10 million people to grab majority of seats in the 150-member corporation. The VVIPS from Delhi flocking into the city for campaigning in local body election is a facetious act. The ruling TRS treating it as prestigious challenge sails vigorously against the stormy weather.

The kind of ridiculous campaign full of aggressive postures was never witnessed before. Cynicism often arises because politicians judge themselves by their rhetoric while citizens judge them by their (mis)deeds. Out of 74 lakh voters, less than half of them (36.74%) had exercised their franchise - a message of disenchantment with politicians' poll-eve promises and post-poll actions.
