Green Peace India, IRSDCL take up plantation drive at KSR railway station
Bengaluru: Green peace India in collaboration with Indian Railway Station Development Corporation Limited (IRSDCL) recently organised a plantation drive around the KSR railway station premises.
The drive was aimed at improving the green cover in the area, besides sensitizing the people about the importance of environment conservation for preventing climate change.
Participants at the plantation drive urged the people to rethink their mobility patterns and use bicycles and other sustainable modes of transportation. "Once called the Garden City, Bengaluru has been reduced to a concrete jungle. While development has been the excuse for rapid urbanisation and concretisation, civil society groups and individuals all need to do their bit. Our plantation drive is such an attempt at restoring some of the lost tree cover in Bengaluru," said Bhanupriya, a Greenpeace volunteer.
According to Greenpeace South Asia analysis of IQAir data released last week, Bengaluru reported an estimated 12,000 avoidable deaths due to air pollution and related problems and caused economic damages to the tune of Rs12,365 crore in 2020.
Speaking on the occasion, an official from IRSDCL also urged the locals to participate in the plantation drives. He also urged NGOs and the general public to protect green 'gold' for the next generations just as they take care of their own wealth.
