12,822 orphans benefit from HZCT scholarships

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Zakat and Charitable Trust (HZCT), which is known for its focus area of increasing educational standards among Muslims, has released its annual report, which was attended by educationists and scholars from the community.

Releasing the trust annual report at the annual meet and Iftar organised by the trust, HZCT chairman Ghiasuddin Babu Khan said that around Rs 4.5 crore was spent by the trust on awarding these scholarships in just one year, in addition to nearly Rs 20 lakh distributed by the trust in the form of scholarships for post metric and professional courses, benefiting 173 people.

HZCT also distributed nearly 12,000 food packets among students, including orphans as part of its Ramzan programme. "A whopping 12,822 school-going orphans have benefited from the scholarships issued by HZCT in a year," said Babu Khan.

Babu Khan explained that the trust supports the impoverished and the weaker sections of the society each year, with major portion of funds to educate the deserving and the needy. 103 Urdu and 3 English medium schools are supported by the trust in Telangana and Rayalaseema, with a total strength of 25,000 students. About 72% of these students are girls. This year, the total amount spent under school education project is Rs1.08 crore, he said.

"The Zakat trust aims to empower the society socially, educationally and financially through these initiatives," he said, adding that the trust has distributed about 12,000 food packs among students, including orphans and widow families during this Ramadan, along with 3,724 Eid cloth packs, containing 2 sarees, and dresses for 2 orphan children to widows, while 3,500 fitra packs are planned for distribution during the last week of Ramzan with the trust's total Ramzan projects costing Rs 1.46 crore.

Furthermore, 316 SSC standard meritorious girl students of government schools who secured at least 9.3 GPA and 9.5 GPA for private school girls were awarded with Rs.10, 000 cash reward.
