Hyderabad: GHMC Commissioner D S Lokesh Kumar claimed here on Wednesday that 35,741 potholes on roads have been filled during the last six months ending January 25.

In a press release issued by the corporation, the commissioner stated that road repair works have been taken up to prevent vehicle-users from facing hardships. He said the rain-damaged roads were being immediately repaired under the supervision of the instant repair teams using the BT material generated by the GHMC hot-mix plant.

According to the GHMC chief, City nalas are being expanded in areas where they are congested and narrow by taking over local properties. This work will facilitate smooth flow of rain water. An amount of Rs.230 crore is being spent to widen 48 nalas spread over an area of 390 km. He revealed that the storm water drain system could take only two cm rainfall. With the expansion of nalas the system's capacity could double to four cm of rainfall. Kumar said only 1,298 km storm water drains were available to facilitate smooth flow of rain water on 9,103 km roads.

The GHMC chief pointed out that during the recent monsoon some City areas recorded a high rainfall of ten cm leading to water stagnation for hours. As many as 30 water-logging locations in City have been identified along with the traffic police. He said special teams have been constituted during the monsoon to clear the stagnated water using pump sets.
