Hyderguda: A team of BC leaders led by R Krishnaiah met union minister Kishan Reddy here at his residence on Friday and submitted a memorandum demanding reservations in promotions.

Among those who met the minister include Gujja Krishna, Babu, Rama Rao, Shyamsunder, Sai, Mohan, Chander Rao, Jillapalli Anji, Vemula Ramakrishna, Sathya Prakash and others. Speaking to media after the meeting, Krishnaiah said that there were no legal or constitutional hurdles to apply reservations in promotions.

He recalled a recommendation by Mandal Commission to implement reservations in promotions as well. He also referred to recent Supreme Court ruling stating that reservations to BCs, SCs and STs can be given in promotions if the number of employees was not as per their population ratio.

Of 54 lakh government employees, there were only 7.5 lakh BC employees, he lamented. He said that most of the premier government offices such as PMO and President's office do not have BC representation. He said that the team met union minister and appealed him to strive for reservations for BCs in promotions.
