Madhapur: The cyber fraudsters from Jamtara district in Jharkhand state have started a new fraud in the name of providing customer care services for different courier services and are cheating the citizens to the tune of lakhs of rupees.

According to Cyberabad police, the modus operandi of fraudsters is as follows:

The cyber fraudsters post their mobile numbers as the customer care service numbers of different courier companies in Google website. If any innocent customer who is waiting for a courier (either letter or parcel), searches for the customer care service of that particular courier company in Google, they they get the fraudster numbers, instead, and fall into their trap.

The fraudsters collect all the details of the courier and start tracking the parcel. Once it gets delivered to the customer, they call up customer and claims to have ensured delivery with their continuous efforts. Once the customer believes the caller/fraudster to be genuine, the fraudster asks them to pay a nominal amount of Rs 10 by sending a Google link. When the custody furnishes the required banking credentials or UPI credentials, the crooks then transfer funds from his bank account to theirs.

In a recent case reported at the cybercrime police station, Cyberabad, the complainant searched for Trackon Courier services in Google and got the wrong customer care number belonging to fraudsters. They helped in tracking the courier. And once the parcel was delivered to him, the fraudster suggested that the complainant join the prime membership of their courier service for immediate delivery by just paying Rs 2. When the customer agreed, he got a phishing link where he gave his Google pay credentials. Immediately, his bank account was drained to the tune of one lakh rupees.
