Case filed in Hyderabad against Twitter, Whatsapp, TikTok for 'anti-CAA' content

Cases were filed against India-based heads of Twitter, Whatspp and TikTok by the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police for permitting the people to upload videos and messages against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The complainant, Silveri Srisailam has named Abhijit Bose, head of WhatsApp, Manish Maheshwar, managing director of Twitter and Nikhil Gandhi, head of TikTok, as respondents. Silveri Srisailam sought permission from a court which directed the cybercrime police to register case against the three social media giants under sections 153A, 121 A, 124, 124 A, 294, 295 A, 505, and 120 B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) along with section 66 of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

On the order of Assistant Commissioner of Police, the CCS police filed a complaint and sought a legal opinion.

In his complaint, Silveri Srisailam stated that the three social media platforms have been allowing the users to upload objectionable content that would cause damage to the Nation Integration and communal harmony. The complainant said that he had approached the police earlier but after no complaint has been filed, he approached the court.
