Cops special drive to save youth from drug menace

Hyderabad: Youngsters in schools and colleges are ruining their lives after becoming addicted to drugs like ganja, cocaine. Even employees of corporate institutions and celebrities are succumbing to the temptation of tasting the banned intoxicants in colleges and pubs.

Police inquiries show that drugs are being supplied from foreign countries. Nigerians who come to the country as visitors and on study visa are resorting to supply of drugs for earning easy money. They are mainly targeting youth and converting them into addicts/salves of the intake. Although many Nigerians have been arrested and jailed, there seems to be no change in their behaviour and they continue to be dealers of intoxicating drugs.

On their part, the police claim that they are taking steps to check the supply of drugs. Jogayya, CCS Additional DCP, told The Hans India that a special focus is being maintained on the drug supply, by mostly Nigerians, to the city and that they are also keeping tabs on pubs and colleges and taking steps to check the menace. As a result, he said the number of cases has come down. He observed that the number of users is increasing because of youth becoming drug addicts. For bringing about a change in youngsters, various awareness programmes are being held in colleges.

Jogayya lays emphasis on parents and teachers devoting special attention on youth to bring about a change in their habits. He advises youngsters not to ruin their precious lives by becoming addicts to drugs and others vices.

According to the police, 40 cases have been registered so far this year. During the last three years 79,108,55 cases respectively have been registered. Although there is a fall in the number of cases, consumption of drugs is found to be increasing on a regular basis, according to voluntary organisations.
