CWC likely to conduct hydrological survey

Update: 2023-01-04 00:38 IST

HyderabadFollowing requests by the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments, the Central Water Commission (CWC) is contemplating conducting a hydrological survey of Godavari waters. This indication was available after the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB) meeting held here on Tuesday.

CWC Director (Hydrology) Nityananda Rai, who attended the meeting virtually from New Delhi, advised the two Telugu states to come out with proper proposals and submit the same to the Commission for hydrological survey.

He said the consent of other states like Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha would also be required before the Commission decides to take up the survey as they too are the stakeholders in the utilization of Godavari waters.

Top Irrigation officials of the two states informed the CWC Director that the hydrological survey would help in utilizing Godavari waters at optimum level and avoid the misuse of waters. In the meeting, the AP government opposed Modikunta and Gudem projects taken up by Telangana on Godavari. The GRMB accepted Sammakka barrage proposed by the TS government and suggested to consult Chhattisgarh before executing the works.

While the AP government requested the board to install telemetry system at 23 places, the TS government demanded this facility at 5 places only.
