Do away with single use plastic: South Central Railway GM
Secunderabad: The South Central railway (SCR) General Manager Gajanan Mallya on Wednesday called for peoples' participation in doing away with single use plastic. SCR marked the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a street play focusing on the dangers of plastic.
Representatives of NGOs, youth and children joined in large numbers to undertake the community service activity. Gajanan Mallya also planted a sapling to mark a "Green Rail Station" campaign which entailed planting of saplings at various places in and around Hyderabad railway station.
It may be noted that 54 plastic bottle crushing machines have been installed at 35 major railway stations. Also 35 sanitary napkin incinerators and napkin dispensers have been set up at 28 stations. Besides, effluent treatment plants, solid waste management and air pollution monitoring are other initiatives across the zone.
The zone has also attained a new land mark towards environmental protection and efficiency of services, with the Hyderabad - Narsapur Express to commence its run with electric locomotive haulage from Wednesday. It is the first train service to run on the newly electrified Bibinagar-Nallapadu section.
