Vidyanagar: The president of BC Welfare Association, R Krishnaiah, said that real tribute to social reformer Mahatma Jyothiba Phule would be when BCs who constitute 56 per cent of the total population get their share of political power. He was speaking at the programme to commemorate 129th death anniversary of noted social reformer Mahatma Jyothiba Phule at BC Bhavan here on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Krishnaiah lauded the efforts of Phule to eradicate caste prejudices, untouchability and illiteracy. He lamented that the downtrodden sections of the society had been facing prejudices even after 70 years of Independence.

Citing a recent survey conducted by the central government, Krishnaiah said that BCs represent only 14 per cent in central government jobs, 12 per cent in judiciary, 2 per cent in industrial, business, commerce and contract sectors and 2 per cent in private jobs, although they constitute 56 per cent of total population. He questioned how a nation be called as democratic when a major community does not get proper representation.

BC leaders, speaking on the occasion, called upon BCs to be united under the leadership of Krishnaiah to form a strong political platform to achieve political power. BC leaders Neela Venkatesh, Krishna Yadav, Raj Kumar, Vemula Ramakrishna, Satish, Ramkoti, Chandrashekhar Goud, Mahender and others were present on the occasion.
